There is little that hasn’t already been said and written about the English language and its widespread use throughout the world, including in our country. Today, English is the second most spoken language in the world. About 350 million people around the world speak it as their mother tongue, while different sources offer different statistics on the number of speakers of English as a foreign language. Thus, some state that 500 million people speak English as a foreign language, while others claim that this number has long been exceeded and that it is currently a figure of close to one billion. Be that as it may, the English language rightfully has the status of a „world language“, that is, the „lingua franca“ of today. What is particularly important to note is the fact that it is the language most often learned as a first foreign language, regardless of the fact that it is not an official language in most countries.

In our country, it has long been no longer an exception, but rather a rule, that English is learned from a young age, and that learning continues through the formal education system. Thus, knowledge of the English language is practically „implied“, as analysis and statistics show – according to one survey, Serbia is ranked 17th in the group of 72 countries that were included in this survey in terms of knowledge of the English language. However, it is not enough to just „know“ the English language in order for someone to engage in translation in the business world, where this language is used more or less daily.
